Biography

Svein Arild Soleng was born on 4/28/1947 in Olderdalen. Olderdalen is a village in a fjord in North Norway. The name of the fjord is Kåfjord. Today it lives 291 people in Olderdalen.

Svein’s mother, Ardis, was of Finnish descent, but was born and raised in Norway. Ardis was born in 1927. Svein’s father, Øyvind, was of Finish/Sami descent and was born and raised in Norway. He was born in 1919. Svein was the oldest of 6 siblings. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. One of his sisters died when she was a baby. The family lived on a farm and had access to vegetables, fish and meat. When Svein was a kid he liked to go fishing. He spent hours and days in the mountains and in the forest. He brought a tent to sleep in.

Svein loved to play soccer. In 1962 he moved all by himself to Tromsø. He was 15 years old. In Tromsø he played soccer on a team named Fløya. Fløya was the best soccer team in Tromsø. He was very good to play soccer. He was maybe the best player in Tromsø at that time. He stopped playing actively soccer in 1986.

In 1965 he was done with his studies to be a baker and a confectionery. He got himself a job at a bakery. After 18 years he stopped working as a baker and confectionery and has since then worked in sales and service in various businesses.

In 1969 he married Leikny. They got two children. The girl named Tone was born in 1971 and the boy named Trond was born in 1973. When Trond was a kid Svein used his. spare time to be a soccer coach for his son. His first grandchild was born in 2000. Svein has now 5 grandchildren; 3 girls and 2 boys. The girls’ names are: Mia, Silja and Nora and the boys’ names are Magnus and Jesper.

In 2012 Svein was retired, but in 2013 Svein started to work again because his old work place needed help and Svein was a little bit bored being retired.

The last two years he has in his spare time worked to create a nature trail in his home village Olderdalen. This summer he finished the work. Things he loves to do now is to play soccer, go skiing, hike in mountains and go fishing and hunting. He goes fishing both in the summer time and in the winter. He usually sleeps in a tent on his trips. He is hunting on grouse. He loves to be out in the nature.

Svein sings all day long. And he loves to spend time with his 5 grandchildren. Svein has many songs on YouTube when he sings with his brothers. In one song he sings about Kåfjord.

Svein likes to travel. He has been in many countries in Europe. On vacations he likes to do be active. He does not like so much to lie on the beach. He likes to ride a bike on vacations. This year Svein and his wife Leikny is going to the States for their first time, they look very forward to that.

Svein’s wife, children, grandchildren, and his grandchildren’s friends think that Svein is very funny and a very kind man. He spends a lot of time with his grandchildren. He is a very funny grandfather.

What have I learned about my family and myself by doing this project?

I have learned a lot of my family and my grandfather. I think this project was very interesting and that history is interesting. I think it is important to know my family’s history. It was fun to learn about my grandfather. I learned that times have changed enormously since my grandfather was born. I’ve learned that life is insanely random because if not my grandfather had moved to Tromsø and met Leikny I wouldn’t I have existed.
